Lafayette tech startup Liqid raises $5.7M seed round of funding

LAFAYETTE – Stealth-mode technology startup Liqid Inc. stepped partially into the light this week, announcing that it has raised a $5.7 million round of seed funding that will be used to advance research and development and accelerate time to market.

But so far the company, which is targeting the data storage industry, has said little about its products.

Kathleen Sullivan, a spokeswoman for the company, said she couldn’t comment further about Liqid, which is headquartered at 1408 Horizon Ave. in Lafayette.

Kingston Technology, a large manufacturer of memory products for computers, servers, printers and mobile devices, participated in the funding round along with flash drive controller manufacturer Phison Electronics, ABR Capital Management and DH Capital Management.

“Liqid is poised to disrupt the market with a fresh vision and ground-breaking technology,” Kingston vice president of specialty flash storage business Darwin Chen said in a press release. “Current technologies, architectures and infrastructures aren’t keeping up with today’s data-driven businesses. With Liqid, we have invested in a company that’s on the cusp of transforming the way organizations manage their tremendous and growing volumes of data.”

Liqid co-founder and CEO Jay Breakstone said in the press release that the funding would allow the company to continue to build out its team.

Last fall, Liqid disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had raised $2.325 million. In April, the company disclosed that another $1.85 million had been raised. Sullivan said she couldn’t comment on whether those amounts were part of the $5.7 million seed round or separate.
