Boulder Valley’s Mercury 100 fastest-growing companies unveiled

LAFAYETTE — Broomfield-based Ascent Builders Inc. led the pack of Boulder and Broomfield counties’ fastest-growing private companies, which were honored Wednesday during BizWest’s 2016 Mercury 100 Boulder Valley ceremony at the Lionsgate Event Center in Lafayette.

The Boulder Valley Mercury 100 list is ranked by percentage revenue growth over a two-year period. It has been divided into five flights of 20 each, with the highest revenue earners in Flight I. Those 20 companies then are ranked by their percentage revenue growth from 2013 to 2015. The lists are compiled by BizWest’s research department, headed by Chad Collins, and vetted by Anton Collins Mitchell.

Ascent, a residential and commercial general contractor and homebuilder, boasted 138 percent revenue growth in the past two years, raking in $9,648,903 in 2015, compared with $4,062,324 in 2013. That placed it atop Flight I, which included companies with 2015 revenues of $6.7 million or more. Boulder-based companies made up the rest of the top five in the flight, with Vertiba finishing second, followed by MinuteKey, Bobo’s Oat Bars and Gorilla Logic Inc.

In Flight II, consisting of companies posting 2015 revenue between $2.8 million and $6.7 million, Louisville-based Solid Power Inc. claimed the top spot, followed by another Louisville-based company, Voltage Advertising and Design Ltd. Rounding out the top five were Niwot-based Blue Spruce Design and Construction Co. and Boulder-based Native Edge Associates Inc. and Mondo Robot LLC. Solid Power, a University of Colorado Boulder spinoff business that develops solid-state rechargeable batteries, saw 2,067 percent revenue growth in the two-year span, from $149,978 in 2013 to $3,250,479 in 2015.

In Flight III, made up of companies posting 2015 revenue between $1.5 million and $2.8 million, Broomfield-based RDS Environmental Inc. led the way, followed by three Boulder-based companies — Caddis PC, Second Phase and Sopher Sparn Architects LLC — and Louisville-based KGA Studio Architects PC. RDS, a certified radon laboratory and environmental-testing company which does business as Always Best Choice Electrical, had 2015 revenue of $2,453,449, up 906 percent from the $243,900 it posted in 2013.

In Flight IV, featuring companies with 2015 revenue between $620,001 and $1.5 million,?BlogMutt, a Boulder-based writing service for businesses too busy to write their own blog posts, fetched first place, followed by Longmont-based Avior Control Technologies Inc., Lafayette-based RiteHealth Solutions and two Boulder-based companies — Details Design Studio and Seth Ellis Chocolatier, which does business as Free2B Foods. BlogMutt leaped from $600,000 in 2013 revenue to $1,475,000 in 2015, a 146 percent growth spurt.

Flight V included companies making $620,000 or less in 2015 revenue, and Boulder-based All County Boulder Property Management took top honors, with 328 percent revenue growth, from $94,572 in 2013 to $405,025 in 2015. It was followed by Boulder-based Creative West Architects, Longmont-based Greater Western Plumbing LLC, Louisville-based Jules Gourmet Catering and Longmont-based Dynamic Designs Printing.
